Department of Earth SciencesAbout Heather Reese
My primary research interest is in remote sensing of subarctic alpine vegetation types and changes in the vegetation of these areas. I combine multiple data sources such as optical data from Sentinel-2 or Landsat, but also incorporate 3D data from LiDAR or photogrammetry. Connecting information at different spatial scales is a challenge, where data from drones and satellite platforms need to be carefully correlated. I fly drones at my research sites with near-infrared and thermal-infrared cameras, and have contributed to a number of cross-disciplinary research projects.
I often work with large area operational projects and cooperate with government agencies and consulting companies in aspects of method development. My future interests are to apply multi-scale remote sensing and spatial modelling to better determine changes (climate and other agents) in alpine, sub-arctic ecosystems. I have also worked with applications in Burkina Faso and Rwanda. As a new member of the Department, I am currently working with further integration of remote sensing into our Earth Science research and teaching.
